Common beginner mistakes on the slopes in Japan

The first thing beginners struggle with is deciding what to rent and what to bring. Skis, boards, boots and outerwear can be rented at almost every resort in Japan, but small items like gloves, goggles and hats touch your skin directly, so they are often not available for rent or come in limited stock. Plan to bring your own accessories. For a full breakdown, see our Ski Resort Rental Guide.

If you rent, do not forget photo ID. Most Japanese resorts ask for identification at the rental counter. For ski length, beginners should aim for roughly 5 to 10 cm shorter than their height.

Sun protection is the item people forget most. Snow glare is intense, so sunscreen and lip balm are essentials even in midwinter. Cold weather also drains phone batteries much faster than usual, so a portable charger is worth its place in your pocket.

On the safety side, helmets are becoming the norm in Japan. Multiple studies show that wearing a helmet significantly reduces the risk of serious injury, and more skiers and snowboarders are choosing to wear one. Beginners, who fall the most, benefit from them the most. Read more in our Slope Safety Guide.

Finally, some mountain restaurants and shops still do not accept cashless payment, so carrying some cash saves trouble.

Frequently asked questions

Should beginners rent or buy gear?

Rent first. But bring your own accessories like gloves, goggles and a hat.

How long should my skis be?

Beginners should pick skis about 5 to 10 cm shorter than their height. Shorter is easier to control.

Do I need ID to rent gear?

Yes, most resorts ask for identification at the rental counter. Bring a passport or driver's license.

Do beginners need a helmet?

It is strongly recommended. Helmet use keeps rising in Japan, and beginners fall the most.

Do I need goggles on sunny days?

Yes. They protect your eyes from snow glare, wind and UV rays.

Is sunscreen really needed in winter?

Yes. Snow reflects UV strongly, and a sunny day on the slopes burns like midsummer.

Why does my phone battery drain so fast?

Batteries drain faster in the cold. Carry a portable charger and keep your phone in an inner pocket.

What do families with kids forget most?

Spare clothes and spare gloves. Kids get wet playing in the snow, so pack extras.
