What you can rent

At almost every ski resort in Japan you can rent skis or a snowboard, boots, poles, and jacket-and-pants sets. If it is your first time, or you only go once a season, renting is the sensible choice. Buying skis and boots costs tens of thousands of yen, and then you have to store and maintain them.

Many rental shops now stock recent models, so the old image of worn-out rental gear no longer holds. Some resorts also offer single-item rentals (just wear, just a board) and set discounts, so check the price list before you go.

What rental shops do not provide

On the other hand, gloves, goggles, beanies, socks and neck warmers touch your skin directly, so most shops do not rent them out - at best they sell them at resort prices. Bring your own. Waterproof gloves and goggles in particular make or break your comfort on the slopes.

Consumables like sunscreen, lip balm and disposable heat packs are the most commonly forgotten items. Snow glare is intense, and winter sun burns skin like midsummer.

Sizing your skis, board and boots

For beginners, skis should be about 5 to 10 cm shorter than your height. Shorter skis are easier to turn and control. A snowboard should be roughly 15 to 20 cm shorter than your height - standing upright, it should reach between your chin and nose.

Boots should fit snugly, with your toes just brushing the front. Oversized boots reduce control and cause fatigue and falls. If you are unsure at the rental counter, ask the staff - that is what they are there for.

Bring photo ID for the rental counter

Most Japanese resorts ask for identification such as a driver's license or passport when you rent. It is an anti-theft measure, and some shops will refuse rentals without it. Keep it in your wallet and bring it. Whether a student card or health insurance card is accepted varies by resort.
