Why you should never cut corners on mountain gear
In the mountains, the temperature drops by roughly 0.6 degrees Celsius for every 100 meters of altitude. A pleasant day at the trailhead can turn surprisingly cold at the summit. Skipping warm layers because the weather "looks fine" is the most dangerous saving you can make on a hike.
Always carry rain gear, even when the forecast is clear. Mountain weather in Japan changes fast, and getting wet in the wind strips body heat quickly, even in summer. A separate rain jacket and pants set is the standard, and it doubles as a wind layer.
The same goes for a headlamp on day hikes. Losing the trail or falling behind schedule can push your descent past sunset, and this happens to beginners more than anyone. A phone flashlight is no substitute: it drains your battery and ties up one hand.
Trails also mean preparing for a possible bear encounter. Since hiking often means walking alone for long stretches, gear like a bear bell matters even more than it does at a campsite. See our Bear Safety Guide for Hiking for details.
Before you set out, tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back. In some mountain areas in Japan, submitting a hiking plan form (tozan-todoke) is requested or expected. See Hiking Plan Forms and Why They Matter for where and how to file one. A realistic plan is the best piece of safety gear you can carry.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mountain hiking and light hiking?
Mountain hiking targets a summit on technical trails; light hiking is an easy walk on maintained paths.
Do I need a headlamp for a day hike?
Yes. Losing the trail or running late can push your descent past sunset.
Should I carry rain gear even if the forecast is clear?
Always. Mountain weather changes fast, and it doubles as a warm layer.
How does temperature change with altitude?
As a rule of thumb, it drops about 0.6°C for every 100m you climb.
Do I need to file a hiking plan?
Some mountain areas in Japan request or expect one. Check in advance.
Can I bring bear spray on a flight?
No. Carry it only by land, or rent it locally.
What should I adjust when hiking with kids?
Plan a gentler pace, shorter distance and less elevation gain.
Do I need sunglasses for a summer mountain hike?
Recommended. UV exposure increases with altitude.
