Rules and safety to check before you go

In Japan, rivers and mountain streams are usually managed by local fishery cooperatives, and in most cases you need to buy a fishing permit called a yuryoken before fishing there. Permits are typically sold at local tackle shops and convenience stores, and increasingly online. Sea fishing from the shore generally does not require a permit, but many piers, breakwaters and port areas are off-limits or have fishing bans. Follow the signs posted on site and the local municipality's guidance. Night fishing is rewarding but riskier. Avoid going alone, and tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back. A headlamp, non-slip footwear and a life jacket near the water are the baseline, not optional extras.

Finally, discarded fishing line and rigs are a serious hazard for wildlife. Bring trash bags and take everything home, including snapped line.
