Common mistakes when cycling in Japan
The most common trouble is a flat tire. In the city you can walk to a bike shop, but on rural cycling roads you are on your own. A portable pump and a spare tube (or a puncture repair kit) belong in your bag no matter how far you ride.
Since April 2023, Japan's revised Road Traffic Act makes wearing a helmet a duty of effort for all cyclists. It is not compulsory, but most fatal injuries in bike accidents involve the head. On longer rides, fueling is what beginners overlook. Beyond water, carry energy snacks on any ride over an hour - running out of energy (known as "hunger knock") hits suddenly.

Layer up: a warm windproof jacket, a thermal base layer, long tights, warm gloves and ear warmers.
Do I need sunglasses?
Yes - they protect your eyes from insects, dust and UV, not just brightness.
