Common mistakes when clam digging in Japan

Clam digging happens in spring (April to June) during spring and neap tides, and the window is only a few hours long. The "golden hours" are the two to three hours around low tide, so aim to arrive just as the water starts pulling back. Check a tide table from the clam digging site or the Japan Meteorological Agency beforehand.

The biggest difference in what to pack comes down to whether gear is provided. Most paid clam digging sites rent out rakes and mesh bags, but free public beaches expect you to bring everything yourself. Confirm rental availability before you book to avoid a surprise on the day.

Freshness is everything once you have your clams. Keep them cool with a cooler box and ice packs until you get home - clams left at room temperature weaken quickly, even before you get to the desanding step. For what to do once you're home, see our complete desanding guide.

"Okay to get wet" is the golden rule for clothing. You will often wade in knee-deep, so pack extra towels and a change of clothes. There is usually no shade on the sand, so a hat and sunscreen matter too.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a clam rake?

Most paid clam digging sites rent them out. Free public beaches expect you to bring your own.

What time should I go?

Aim for the two to three hours before low tide, as the water starts pulling back. Check a tide table first.

How do I bring the clams home?

Keep them cool in a cooler box with ice packs. Room temperature causes them to weaken quickly.

How do I desand the clams?

Soak them in roughly 3% saltwater in a dark spot for two to three hours. See our full desanding guide for details.

Is this a good activity for kids?

Yes. Just pack extra drinks, sun protection and a spare change of clothes.

Aqua shoes or rain boots?

Since you often wade knee-deep, aqua shoes that stay comfortable when wet are the better choice.
