Bike Touring Packing Guide

How you load your gear makes or breaks the trip.

Rule one: load the bike, not your back

The biggest mistake in bike touring is riding with a large backpack. The weight grinds on your shoulders and lower back, your back sweats, and the high center of gravity makes the bike wobbly. Put the luggage on the bike and keep your body light.

The only thing worth wearing is a small sling bag with valuables and snacks. Everything else goes in bags mounted on the bike.

Aim for 60 to 75 liters in total

For touring with overnight stays, 60 to 75 liters of total capacity is a good benchmark. A typical split: rear panniers at 40 to 50 liters for the pair, a saddle bag at 10 to 15 liters, and a front or frame bag at 5 to 10 liters. Camping gear pushes you toward the upper end; staying at inns keeps you well below it.

If in doubt, err on the smaller side - empty space always fills itself with things you do not need.

Not sure what goes in the bags? Build your list with the Cycling Packing List - it adapts to tent stays and inn stays alike.

Placement: heavy items low and to the rear

The golden rule is heavy things low, near the center or rear wheel. Tools and clothes go at the bottom of the panniers. Bulky-but-light gear like a tent or sleeping bag rides on top of the rear rack or in the saddle bag. The front bag holds light things you want while riding: maps, camera, snacks.

Balance the left and right panniers as evenly as you can - uneven weight causes wobble. For rain, pack clothes and electronics in waterproof stuff sacks before they go into the bags.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just tour with a backpack?

For short rides, yes. For overnight touring the strain and high center of gravity become a real problem - load the bike instead.

Do I really need 60 to 75 liters?

That figure includes camping gear. If you stay at inns or hotels, 30 to 40 liters is usually enough.

What if my bike has no rack?

Bikepacking-style setups with a large saddle bag plus a frame bag carry 20 to 30 liters without any rack.

Where should the heavy items go?

At the bottom of the panniers, near the center or rear of the bike. The lower the weight, the more stable the ride.

How do I rain-proof my luggage?

Use fully waterproof bags, or pack contents into waterproof stuff sacks before loading them.

Can I hang a bag on the handlebars?

Dangling bags interfere with steering and are dangerous. Use a properly mounted front bag instead.
