How to Choose a Campsite Without Regrets

When to book during high season

During Golden Week, summer holidays and other peak periods, popular campsites in Japan fill up within minutes of booking opening. Assuming "a month ahead is enough" often does not hold during high season - if you already know your travel dates, find out exactly when booking opens and be ready to act the moment it does. Keep two or three backup sites in mind in case your first choice is already gone.

Three things to check before you book

First, whether open fires are allowed. Sites that ban direct fires require you to bring your own fire pit or stand - showing up without one and finding out on site is a common disappointment.

Second, check-in and check-out times. If you expect to arrive late, or want to start setting up early, confirm in advance how flexible the site is.

Third, whether showers are available. Even sites with a shower building often charge by the minute or by use, and waiting lines can form at peak times. This matters more than people expect, especially in summer.

Wooded sites vs. open sites

Campsites generally fall into two types: wooded sites surrounded by trees, and open sites with clear views. Wooded sites offer shade and stay cooler in summer, but airflow is often weaker and the risk of a wildlife encounter tends to be higher than on open sites.
